Violent winds and heavy rains on 15 August have led to flash floods in southwest Algeria. In particular Tindouf and Laayoune Sahrawi refugee camps have been affected. 11 people were injured. Part of the infrastructure, houses and tents have reportedly been damaged and food stock lost. Stagnating water is increasing the risk of water-borne diseases. Water level remains high, hindering the access to health services.
The Algerian Civil Protection was the first responder to provide emergency assistance to the affected population. NGOs, UN agencies and the Sahrawi Red Crescent are currently conducting an assessment to evaluate the impact of the disaster and uncovered needs.
Already in October 2015, serious floods affected 17 841 households and Sahrawi refugee camps, almost entirely destroying Dakhla camp.
